than president obama, you could argue. it makes sense that he's serving as the president's proxy. this is something the president is engaged with. this is something the white house is very engaged with. he said yesterday he's optimistic that a deal can be struck. i think that's not surprising. that's what you'd expect to come from president obama. but we're also -- we sort of said tonight is the deadline and that's true because a lot of the tax cuts expire at midnight. the sense we're getting from a lot of sources and from members of congress is that perhaps tonight isn't a hard and fast deadline. mitch mcconnell and the vice president are negotiating in earnest to find a deal. but it's sort of difficult to see how exactly that may come to be by midnight and have votes in the senate and house. the thought is that going over the cliff gives cover for some democrats and certainly some republicans. there will be a lot more pressure after the cliff comes to be to put a solution in place. even after midnight were to come and go, we would see them wo working towards an agreement, e we

republican support. we're also expecting that president obama will likely return to washington, d.c. at this point it seems more a matter of when and not really matter of if. and then right now the plan that the white house is trying to push forward is to deal with the tax hikes for those earning $250,000 or less. it appears those spending cuts that are the other part of the fiscal cliff will likely set in. and then what happens there will maybe be something that democrats and republicans try to deal with in the coming weeks, in the coming months. that means even come say the end of the year here or if we go over the cliff and there's some quick resolution, it's not for everything and we'll be dealing with a lot of these problems for some time, carol. >> what's the president doing in hawaii? >> reporter: the president has been getting in some r and r. he arrived saturday morning. he played golf with some of his buddies. he wept outer with his wife. yesterday he attended the ceremony for senator daniel inn way. and then he went for a hike in the afternoon with his daughters. this may

short. and so far there has been no deal reached between the lawmakers and president obama to try to avoid going over the fiscal cliff that comes on new year's day. but after a meeting at the white house, the president said he is hopeful. >> i just had a good and constructive discussion at the white house with senate and house leadership about how to prevent this tax hike on the middle class. and i'm optimistic we may still be able to reach an agreement that can pass both houses in time. senators reid and mcconnell are working on such an agreement as we speak. >> cnn's chief business correspondent ali velshi joins us from new york with some very good insight. senate majority leader harry reid has said if they don't reach something by monday he'll bring forward a bill to help out the middle class for an up-and-down vote. >> right. >> put everybody on the record, but especially republicans. isn't that the tactic? >> exactly right. the step before that is harry reid is working on some bill that might get bipartisan support in the senate. president obama in that meeting apparently told t
